Special Guest: Fred Mayer

Fred Mayer comes to us today as a teacher, musician and sound healer, and organic farmer and plant intuitive. His teaching experiences started in 1977 in remote communities in Alaska where he began training young musicians and organizing community music events. He went on to conduct orchestras bands and choirs all over the US, perform on violin viola and percussion, composing for ensembles of all sorts, and earning four degrees in music including a PhD in Music Education.

In 2012-13 Fred turned his focus to sound healing studying with Fabien Maman and Terres Unsold at the Tama Do Academy for Sound, Color and Movement in Switzerland and later continued with Eileen McCusnick’s training in Biofield Tuning.

Fred’s shamanic healing practices include colored silks and essences, as well as all manner of acoustically produced sounds from stones to bowls, water, bells, tuning forks, crystal pyramids, drums, rattles and more… and especially our voices.

His current musical passion includes acoustical instrument design and construction specially for tailored for the music and sound components of ceremonies. His recent instrument, the monokotra, is a large 37-string composite instrument that combines string cultures of Greece, Japan and India into a single resonator. It is used both as a solo instrument and in ensembles with singers and other acoustic musicians. He’ll be playing monokotra for us on today’s podcast. Fred is also a drum maker in both traditional and contemporary designs and continues teaching and making music wherever he is. Early on, his box was checked “Plays Well With Others”.

In addition to the musical world, Fred owned and operated a small-scale organic farm for eleven years in the Ozarks Mountains of Arkansas. There he grew staple foods and medicinal plants on a no till permaculture model for markets, restaurants and apothecaries in northwest Arkansas. After moving to Oregon, he continued growing smaller, more beautiful and efficient gardens in his ‘postage stamp’ backyard. Since Covid, he has combined his teaching experience with gardening, serving as ‘garden coach’ to help empower other backyard gardeners to become more productive during these challenging times. “Good food is our first line of health.”
