Birth Is a Human Rights Issue

Midwifery Today Logo

The issue of human rights is so important that we decided to do another conference dedicated to this topic in Strasbourg, France. It is sad that in the five years since we have done our previous conference in Strasbourg, things have not changed much globally. The 2010 conference program had these words printed on it: “Every mother and baby has the right to be treated with reverence and respect during the birth process, including pregnancy and beyond.” All we need to do is apply that phrase to childbirth throughout the world and ascertain how we are doing. We are not doing very well, so let us come together to attend great classes, learn from teachers and from each other, discuss the issue and revitalize our plans to change the world.

From the Global Midwifery Council statement are these important words: “The most basic human right for every woman is the right to choose her place of birth and who will attend her. Mothers and babies do best in an environment conducive to the respect for the physiology of birth. Conscious mother-centered midwifery has been shown to serve that need.” Our conference will address these important issues and make plans to change the future of childbirth around the world.

Hermine Hayes-Klein, a lawyer who has taken this issue around the world in many conferences including some attached to Midwifery Today, will be one of our esteemed speakers. Her work focuses on legal issues surrounding childbirth and includes the defense of midwives. Other teachers include Gail Hart, Fernando Molina, Eneyda Spradlin-Ramos, Verena Schmid, Diane Goslin, Cornelia Enning, Carol Gautschi and myself.

Mark your calendar! The dates are 19–23 October 2016.

The Issue of Birth Rights

Birth is biological. At its most fundamental level, it is an animal rights issue. When I was working in Mexico, I was not surprised when, following a birth, a grandmother asked me, “How is the mother?” But when she endearingly asked, “Y la creatura?” (“And the little creature?”), I stopped in my step. Something powerful and deeply instinctual came alive in me. I had watched wild and farm animals bond, nurse and protect their young. I had observed and studied the importance of maternal-infant bonding from a professional viewpoint. I had dedicated my midwifery career to keeping one of my thousand eyes on everything from environment to timing to security to states of mind and heart and soul—anything that had the potential of affecting or shaping those first glances and touch and moments of irreplaceable connection between the mother and her fresh born. Nothing had set things more clear and right in my mind as that grandmother’s simple and urgent question regarding her “hope of the future”—”Y la creatura?”

We are creatures. We are animals. It is not a bad or lowly thing to be. It allows us to eat and poop and get in out of the cold and enjoy mating and flee danger. We embody an instinct that is backed by millions of years of invested intelligence. It certainly includes birth. It most certainly includes birth.

Who thought of holding legs above a pelvis with stirrups or shaving pubic hair to help create a sterile field or inserting enemas for cleanliness or providing strangers for companions? Certainly not creature mothers and babies. They would kick and bite and run for the hills. They wouldn’t need to consult books or experts. Their instinctual knowing only takes a second to be consulted. The answer and response is automatic. It takes force, mighty force, to restrain an instinctual animal in the moment of performing a bodily function, especially birth. Have we successfully used intellectual fear to overpower the instinctual fear of a birthing human, so she will now submit to actions that otherwise would make her bite and kick and run for the hills?

Numerology for 20/September/2015

You go to great lengths to ensure there is harmony around you and that you are running a ‘tight ship’. You may deny your feelings in order to have a sense of control. You may be close to your feelings but unable to express them. You may make yourself small in an effort to fit in, when you were born to stand out and inspire others to think in new ways. Either way, try not to give too much and don’t let your emotions run away with you. Try not to put energy into pushing your feelings down. There can be a fear of failure and of rejection, but you have to be true to who you are and it’s from mistakes that we learn. Your way to heal is to share and this can mean taking a risk. Dedicate everything to the highest good and find the courage to truly be yourself and everything will come right.

Casting the Net of Light for the World

Grandmothers Speak

“The present imbalance of energy on earth has placed all life in danger. It is time to return to balance.”  The Great Council of the Grandmothers are calling us to step into our power, calling women and men to reach out to one another in love.

All are welcome to this work.
“This is the Net of Light that will hold the earth during the times of change that are upon you. You are part of this Net. Take your glorious place.”
“Here is a picture that’s worth a thousand words,” the Grandmothers said. “On the right is the Net of Light or Cosmic Web that connects all things in the universe. When science recently learned how to photograph “dark matter,” they came upon the Net of Light. This photograph of the Net or Web illustrates how everything in the Universe is linked to everything else.
“The photo on the left that shows lone stars floating against a dark background is a traditional depiction of space where every form is distinct from all others. This photo not only depicts space,” the Grandmothers said, “but it also illustrates the popularly accepted view of the world–that everyone and everything on earth is separate from everything else. This old “truth” they shook their heads, “is simply not true.
“Each time you think of and work with the Net of Light, you move away from the consciousness of separation you were taught was “real,” and open to the actual REALITY of life. As the photograph on the right shows, each of you is part of the flow of life, part of the One Love. There is no separation.
We ask you to think of and work with the Net of Light each day. Do this to strengthen it so it can better support the earth at this time. Do it for yourself and for everything that lives.”
The Universe

Deep connection to one another, the ancestors, and the lands where we’ll meet. Our goal is healing, our reach will be broad.

The Great Council of the Grandmothers message is, as ever, a return to balance between Yin and Yang and a respect for the underlying unity of life. They ask us to live in the One Love and offer to guide us past the superficial boundaries of nationality, time, and space.

Together we will heal the past and in so doing, heal the present. We will link the lands where we gather with the Net of Light to bring reconciliation to many dimensions.

  • Join the earth to the the Net of Light to heal old wounds.
  • Connect with the ancestors of the light within the specific locations where we  gather
  • Harmonize relationships to mend wounds of individuals, cultures, races, and nations.

If you feel called to be part of this service to yourself, your family, your country, and the family of life, please come.

  • Pennsylvania, U.S. A., October 9-11
  • Oostmalle,Belgium, October 23-25

Feng Shui Tip: Chandeliers

I have always enjoyed the sparkling beauty of chandeliers. Watching the light bounce off and dance with the crystal chandelier jewels always brings a smile to my face. The light I am referring to is the softened natural lightening coming in from windows, during the day. I have a dimmer switch for my chandelier so that I may enjoy the low, soft, reflected light at night time as well.

The most spectacular place to hang chandeliers is in the Southwest area of your home. The combination of fire and earth energies brings wonderful love luck to every resident member. You’ll find your marriage is much happier and younger members of the family will never be short of boyfriends or girlfriends. If you are single, you won’t be for long!

My office is in the Southwest area of our home. The chandelier came with the home, and it was a bit dull in it’s original state. So, my husband drilled tiny holes around the metal rim of each light, and we hung up chandelier crystals to give it a whole new, sparkly look. I picked out the clear crystals and a dear friend gave me the amber ones.

Chandelier

You can find antique or old chandeliers at flea markets, thrift stores and tag sales. It is fun to refinish them and give them an updated look. I know some people may cringe over buying anything antique but you can clear the energy from any item. Plus, you refinishing it, with your energy all over it, does clear and cleanse it. Personally, I collect antiques and haven’t ever had a problem with ‘attached’ energies from previous owners. In fact, many antiques have very few owners. A factory made item….how many people are touching that item? So, new isn’t always better quality wise or energy wise.

As with anything reflective, make sure you clean your chandelier on a monthly basis. This keeps the Balanced energy… Chi…flowing in your home and/or office.

Numerology for 17/September/2015

You may have some ideas you are determined to make real, in the process you may be determined to get to the bottom of things and can be quite unstoppable with regard to this. You may be surprised by the amount of emotion that comes up in you, try not to judge others too harshly today, focus on taking responsibility yourself and not blaming others. Make time for fun and get out of the way so others can come through with their suggestions and maybe some fresh ideas and/or solutions.
