The elevators needed paid operators.
You certainly couldn’t ask total novices and regular people to figure out the sophisticated levers with floor headings on them. You needed trained, skilled professionals to handle a job like that. Someone who’d been to elevator school and knew the inner workings of the trade. I mean, what if that blasted thing stalled or the doors didn’t open or something happened to the gears or pulleys?
No, we needed elevator operators. They were an important piece of our economy…in 1890.
Now, of course, the elevator is ubiquitous. It’s literally operated with the touch of a button. If you can read the numbers and reach them, you are an elevator operator.
